Few films cast a spell quite like The Third Man. Set in the shadowy ruins of postwar Vienna, this 1949 classic is part noir thriller, part psychological mystery, and part haunting meditation on friendship, loyalty, and moral compromise. Directed by Carol Reed and written by Graham Greene, the film follows American pulp novelist Holly Martins (played by Joseph Cotton, one of the most compelling and versatile actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age) who arrives in Vienna only to discover that the death of his old friend Harry Lime may not be what it seems. From its unforgettable zither score to its tilted camera angles and rain-slicked streets, The Third Man created a cinematic world unlike any before it. Orson Welles, in one of the most legendary performances in film history, turns Harry Lime into a character as charming as he is dangerous. Suspenseful, witty, stylish, and surprisingly modern, The Third Man remains as entertaining and provocative today as it was seventy-five years ago. Whether seeing it for the first time or returning to it again, this is one of those rare films that only grows richer with each viewing. The film won the Grand Prix at Cannes, an Academy Award for cinematography, and was later voted the greatest British film of all time by the British Film Institute. 1 hr. 33 min. running time. Rotten Tomatoes scores it at 99% critics and 93% audience.
