The Megunticook Historic Preservation Foundation

Caring for a place that has belonged to this community for more than a century.

Our Purpose

The Megunticook Historic Preservation Foundation is a Maine nonprofit corporation organized exclusively for charitable purposes. Our mission is to support the preservation and protection of the historic clubhouse and grounds at the Megunticook Golf Club, 212 Calderwood Lane, Rockport, Maine — a property that has served the greater Rockport community since 1899.

“The Club’s historic clubhouse and original golf course are listed in the National Register of Historic Places — a designation that reflects their important place in Maine’s architectural and recreational heritage.”

A Landmark Worth Preserving

Designed by Boston architect Charles Brigham and opened in 1902, the Megunticook clubhouse is the oldest golf clubhouse building in Maine still being used for its original purpose, and remains largely intact. The building, with its shingled exterior, stone foundation, broad wraparound porch overlooking Penobscot Bay, as well as its exposed wood beam interior and large stone fireplaces, is an important example of the Craftsman style.

The nine-hole course that surrounds it was shaped by some of the most respected landscape architects of the early twentieth century, including Warren H. Manning and A.D. Taylor, whose work here placed an emphasis on incorporating the existing natural landscape and preserving open ocean views.

Listing on the National Register of Historic Places recognizes the exceptional significance of both the clubhouse and grounds.

How the Foundation Operates

The Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity, separate from the Megunticook Golf Club. It raises and stewards funds dedicated solely for preservation and restoration purposes, and makes grants to the Club to support work on the historic structures and grounds.

This structure ensures that gifts designated for preservation remain permanently dedicated to that purpose — protected by the Foundation’s governing documents and by federal and Maine nonprofit law. The Foundation’s all-volunteer board provides fiduciary oversight and sets preservation priorities in consultation with the Club’s leadership.

Contributions to the Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. The Foundation’s EIN is 41-3062090.

Foundation Board of Directors

The Foundation is governed by a volunteer board drawn from the Megunticook community. We welcome questions about our work and our mission.
